I will assume you have some kind of router in your residence, if so, can you log into the web interface of it and determine what the ip address of it is? What is it showing for the default gateway, its IP address. Your flatmate won't be able to ping anything on the 172.16.x.x address range as those addresses are not routable, they will never see each other. Can you connect to the internet with your Thinkpad (you didn't mention it so just checking). Have you turned off turned off any and all firewalls and tried connecting? at all! I've then tried with the windows built-in network thing from the start menu (start/printers) - same problem. Obviously my Win7 cannot find the printer in the network. However this step always fails upon connecting to the printer.

Following the manual further I installed the software on my Win7 thinkpad via the provided driver-cd.
The device connects to my WPA2 protected home network after typing in the passphrase, gets dhcp information and claims to be up and running. So I followed the instructions to set up the printer which worked flawless. I want to use the wireless networking capability of the device as a) there is no usb cable provided in the package and dont have one atm ( b) it's nicer than running around with a usb cable.
